Tuna exports to the US recover amid intensifying supply competition

News 08:27 29/10/2026 Phuong Linh
(seafood.vasep.com.vn) Vietnam’s tuna exports to the US are showing a clear recovery after a difficult start to the year. However, the rebound is taking place against a backdrop of declining US tuna imports and a shifting supply structure, posing new challenges for Vietnamese businesses.

Exports rise as US imports decline

Vietnam’s tuna exports to the US have rebounded strongly in every month since June. In the first nine months of the year, export value reached more than USD 280 million, up 9%. The US remains Vietnam’s largest tuna export market, accounting for nearly 39% of total export value.

Notably, this result was achieved while total US tuna imports fell in the first eight months of the year. This suggests that Vietnamese exports are performing well, even though overall market demand has yet to recover.

By product category, frozen tuna loins and meat continued to drive growth, while canned tuna posted only modest gains. The divergence partly reflects mixed trends between demand for raw material for processing and the consumer product segment.

US market redistributing orders among suppliers

One of the most notable changes in the US market is the shift in supply among tuna-exporting countries.

In frozen tuna loins and meat, Vietnam remains the largest supplier to the US. In the first eight months of the year, the value of imports from Vietnam fell more slowly than the overall market decline, indicating that Vietnamese products have held their position relatively well against competitors.

The situation in processed tuna is different. While Thailand continues to be a major supplier, countries such as Mexico, Indonesia, Peru and Ecuador are increasing shipments to the US in certain product lines. In particular, the rise of suppliers in the Americas is adding pressure on Asian exporters.

Thanks to their geographic proximity and shorter transit times, producers in the Americas are better placed to fulfil orders requiring quick delivery. This is a significant factor as US importers manage inventories more tightly and are more flexible in choosing their sources.

These developments show that competition in the US is changing. Rather than relying on a handful of traditional suppliers, importers are broadening their options, which creates opportunities for new sources of supply but also increases pressure on Vietnamese companies.

Policy and raw material challenges

Beyond shifts in competition, Vietnamese tuna companies also face uncertainty over US trade policy, including investigations under Section 301.

At the same time, requirements under the Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA) raise the challenge of securing compliant raw material with full traceability. Adjusting sourcing may add costs for companies, affecting production costs and contract delivery schedules.

In this context, the ability to secure raw material and control costs will become increasingly important for sustaining exports to the US.

How long will the recovery last?

The third-quarter results are a positive signal for Vietnam’s tuna exports, particularly after an unfavorable start to the year. Even so, the outlook for the final months of the year should be assessed with caution, as US import demand has yet to show a clear recovery.
